Can Your Clients Afford NOT To Have An EAP?
Consider these statistics and how Optima EAP can benefit your clients and their employees:
Mental Health:
- 44% of employees surveyed had experienced a mental health issue. Only 26% of surveyed employees felt that their supervisor effectively managed mental health issues. 44% of managers had no training in how to manage employees with mental health issues. (Morneau Shepell, 2010)
- Workers with depressive disorders can have almost 4 times more health related lost productive time than those who do not suffer from these problems. (Morneau Shepell, 2010)
- The estimated economic burden of depression in 2000 was $43.7 billion. $31.1 billion for indirect costs (e.g. decreased productivity and lost work days) and $12.4 billion for direct costs (e.g. medication and physician time) (NMHA, 2000)
Absenteeism:
- Psychological problems account for 61% of absences from work each year, 65-85% of employee terminations and 80-90% of industrial accidents
- An estimated 1 million workers are absent on an average workday due to stress related complaints (The American Institute of Stress, 2000)
- Unscheduled absenteeism costs employers close to $700 per employee per year.
- EAP intervention resulted in a 34% reduction in costs related to lost productivity. (Morneau Shepell, 2010)
Substance Abuse:
- 40% of industrial fatalities and 47% of industrial injuries are linked to alcohol consumption/alcoholism
- 36% of all employee thefts were directly related to employees with drug abuse problems
• 70% of all current adult illegal drug users are employed (CSAT, 1999)
- Drug reliant employees incur 300% higher medical costs and benefits, compared to healthy coworkers (US Chamber of Commerce, Workers at Risk: Drugs on the Job)
Some Benefits of Optima EAP
For every dollar invested in an EAP, employers generally save anywhere from $5 - $16. (USDL, What Works: Workplaces Without Drugs)
- Increase in employee productivity
- Decline in absenteeism, utilization of sick benefits, work-related accidents, and workers’ compensation claims
- Reduction in inpatient alcohol and other drug abuse treatment costs
- Over 80% of employees who were formally referred to Optima EAP for job related concerns completed counseling and were able to return to the workplace, and over 90% of employees seeking assistance from Optima EAP resolve their presenting issue within the allotted number of visits.
Sample EAP Cost Analysis
According to research of the U.S. Department of Labor, at least 10% of employees in the workforce are troubled. Consider an organization with 120 employees and an average hourly wage of $15.50:
- First, figure your daily cost of one troubled employee:
$15.50 x 1 hour of non-productive activity daily = $15.50
- Second, figure your annual cost of the non-productive activity:
$15.50 of lost productivity x 5 days a week x 52 weeks a year = $4,030
- Third, figure the average number of troubled employees: 120 x 10% = 12
- Forth, figure your total annual cost loss:
Cost loss of 12 troubled employees at $4030 per year = $48,360
-
Consider your clients … can they afford NOT to have an EAP?
Tell your clients that if they have an employee whose home problems are affecting work, or whose work problems are affecting home – then they have an employee who can benefit from EAP.
Remember, Optima EAP serves companies in two ways:
- Promote the well being of the company employees
- Support supervisors and managers in identifying and dealing with employees in need of assistance
